March 2015 Meeting

Our March meeting will be Saturday the 21st at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at the home of Catrrine Ponall, 2818 Bedford Avenue in Raleigh, near the NC State Campus. Bedford is a one way street, so you’ll need to come in on Dixie Trail, which runs between Wade Avenue and Hillsborough St.

This month, we’ll continue looking at ornamentation and embellishments, showing you ways you can add a little something extra to your music. We will be featuring the flutes and music of Belo Cozad, an old time Kiowa flute player. As always, we’ll also make lots of music. If you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

Coming up in April is Musical Echoes, one of the longest-running flute festivals, based in Fort Walton Beach, FL. This year, Mark Holland will be headlining the event, along with Jonny Lipford, Shelley Morningsong, Gareth Laffely, and a number of other performers. More information can be found at http://www.musicalechoes.org/. I’ve been there many, many times, so if you have any questions about it, just let me know.

Also, in May, R.C. Nakai will be performing in Black Mountain, NC. He’ll be at LEAF, a family-friendly music festival on May 7-10, playing several times throughout the weekend. LEAF is a great event, especially if you’re up for camping. Tickets always sell out, so if you’re planning to go, get yours early. Check out www.theleaf.org for more information, and just ask if you have any questions.

If you’d like to host our next meeting, please let me know. And as always, feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 21st.
