May 2014 Meeting

Our May meeting will be Saturday the 24th at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at the home of Andrew Shakinovsky, 7001 Eastridge Dr. in Apex. We’ll take a look at rim-blown flutes, and we’ll have plenty of them on hand so that you can try to make your first sounds with them. We’ll also feature the flutes and music of Michael Graham Allen, better known as Coyote Oldman. Yeah, we talked about him a year ago, but he’s singlehandedly responsible for reintroducing early Native American rim-blown flutes, so we’d be remiss not to talk about him again this time around.

As always, we’ll also make lots of music. If you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

If you’re looking for a festival to attend, check out the Renaissance of the North American Flute Foundation gathering (http://www.rnaff.org/), June 5-8 in Townsend, TN. Also, an event not to be missed is the World Flute Society convention (http://worldflutesociety.org/), July 16-20 in Eau Claire, WI. If you’re interested in attending either of these and would like more details, please feel free to get in touch.

As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 24th at Andrew’s house.
