March 2014 Meeting

Ok, let’s try this one again. Since we cancelled the February meeting due to the Snowpocalypse, we’ve just shifted the entire thing — location, topics, etc. — a month. Our March meeting will be Saturday the 8th at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at the home of Catrrine Ponall, 2818 Bedford Avenue in Raleigh, near the NC State Campus. Bedford is a one way street, so you’ll need to come in on Dixie Trail, which runs between Wade Avenue and Hillsborough St.

This month, we’ll be talking about using microphones to amplify your playing. We’ll look at the different types of microphones, how close to the mic you should be, and where you should point the mic for the best sound. We will also be featuring the flutes and music of Bryan Akipa. As always, we’ll also make lots of music. If you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

Potomac Flute Festival — http://www.potomacflutefestival.org/ — is coming up on March 14-16 in Rockville, MD. It’s a great indoor event packed with classes and workshops. Cornell Kinderknecht, Jeff Ball, Mark Holland, Suzanne Teng, Scott August, and Arvel Bird will be performing this year. I’ve seen them all over the years and they’re all amazing musicians. Registration info is on the website. The event costs $130 for the full weekend if you register before March 1, or $155 after. Single day tickets are less. If you’re interested in going and would like to share a ride, please let me know. I know of at least one person who is interested in carpooling, and I’d love to help connect people so that more of our friends from the Raleigh/Durham area can attend this festival.

As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 8th at Catrrine’s house.
