September 2017 Meeting

September 7, 2017

Our September meeting will be this Saturday the 9th at 2PM. This month, we’ll be meeting at at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve located at 2616 Kildaire Farm Rd in Cary. There will be some walking involved to get to the pavilion, but nothing strenuous.

As a backup, if the weather is uncooperative, we’ll meet at the home of Mara Cohen, 304 Morganford Place in Cary.

This month, we’ll be featuring the music of Suzanne Teng, and we’ll be looking at various traditional Chinese flutes. As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too.

In order to make life a little easier for all of us, I went ahead and scheduled out all meetings for 2017. Many of you have already volunteered to host these meetings and to act as our monthly facilitator for playing time, and I definitely appreciate that. Here’s the schedule listing both host and facilitator for each month:

October 7: Dave / Facilitator needed
November 4: Jeff & Kim / Michelle
December 9: Annual holiday shindig at Jon’s house

As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 9th.

June 2017 Meeting

May 31, 2017

Everyone,

Once again, I’m running behind getting the announcement out due to my crazy schedule lately. My apologies. I’m probably going to migrate the mailing list to an email marketing service I can use to schedule announcements and have them go out automatically. Just need time to implement it. Stay tuned.

Anyway, our June meeting will be this Saturday, June 3, at 2PM at my house — 112 Oakbeech Ct. in Holly Springs.

Instead of featuring a recording artist and flutemaker as I usually do, I’m going to present a seminar on traditional flute playing that I’ve done at various festivals around the country. Here’s a quick description: Native American flute music as it was traditionally played is quite a bit different than the music we hear today. In this one hour workshop, we will listen to examples of some of the earliest recorded flute music, explore how songs are structured, and learn some basic techniques that will allow you to play in a similar style.

Please do your best to be on time so we can start promptly.

Then we’ll do some facilitated playing activities. As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

May 2017 Meeting

December 2016 Meeting

November 30, 2016

Flute friends,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Now that you’ve eaten all your leftovers, I wanted to pass along the details for our upcoming December gathering. On Saturday the 10th, from 2 to 6 PM, I’m hosting our 5th Annual Epic Holiday Musical Shindig at my home. We’ll fire up the PA system, break out more instruments than you can count, and create lots of bodacious grooves and tasty jams. No discussion topics. Just music. And door prizes. And plenty of food. It wouldn’t be a proper holiday shindig without food. My family will provide an assortment of snacks and finger foods as well as coffee and tea. If you’d like to bring a treat to share, that’s great, but please don’t feel obligated to do so.

As the format for this meeting will be largely an open mic setup, please bring some instruments and have something in mind that you’d like to play. There are plenty of us who play percussion, strings, or other instruments, so if you’d like some accompaniment, just let me know.

If you’d like to contribute something for the door prizes, that’s would be awesome. In the past, we’ve had enough items that everyone got to take something home, but my own stash of giveaways has dwindled significantly over the last couple years. Old CDs you don’t listen to any more, flute bags, instructional materials, etc. would be great contributions.

We’re located at 112 Oakbeech Ct. in Holly Springs, just south of the Raleigh/Cary area. You should be able to find us on Google Maps or your trusty GPS, but if not, please let me know and I’ll be happy to provide you with directions. We’re on a cul-de-sac so parking is at a premium, but we’ll manage. I look forward to seeing you there.

Just shoot me an email or RSVP to the Facebook event so we can get a headcount and plan accordingly. It would be tragic if we ran out of chocolate.

Thanks,
Jon
