Archives For Meetings

I hope you’re all doing well. I just wanted to officially announce that due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as well as the stay at home orders currently in place in Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties, we will not meet in April. Stay home, stay healthy, wash your hands, and play your flute. Hopefully we will all see each other again soon.

March 2020 Meeting

March 3, 2020

Flute Friends,

Our March meeting will be this Saturday the 7th at 2PM. This month, Ken Moore and Barbara Pedersen will be hosting our meeting at the Paul Green Cabin on the grounds of the North Carolina Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden (ncbg.unc.edu) is easily located at 100 Old Mason Farm Road in Chapel Hill. It will be easy to spot since it is across the street from the Chapel Hill Ronald McDonald House. There is ample free parking. The map of the grounds of the Botanical Garden will show the location of the Paul Green Cabin at location F in the upper right hand corner. Ken will set out yellow surveyor flags from the parking area to help everyone find their way to the Cabin. Ample seating is available on wooden benches along the cabin walls. You may want to bring a cushion to soften the hard, flat wooden surface. If you need further directions, Ken’s number is 919-423-4735.

This month, we’ll be featuring the flutes and music of Raymond Redfeather. Then we’ll do some facilitated playing activities. As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too.

In order to make life a little easier for all of us, I went ahead and scheduled out all meetings for 2020. Here’s the schedule for the rest of the year. Note that we still need hosts for most months:

Flute Friends,

Happy New Year! Our January meeting will be next Saturday the 4th at 2PM. This month, we’ll be at Dawn and Ed Dougherty’s home, 2685 Ridgeville Rd in Prospect Hill, up Highway 86 north of Hillsborough.

Instead of our normal program this month, we’ll do something a little different. We’d like to feature our local flutemakers and hear from them about how they got into flutemaking and where it has taken them.

After that, we’ll do some facilitated playing activities. Then, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too.

December 2019 Meeting

December 1, 2019

Flute friends,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Now that you’ve eaten all your leftovers, I wanted to pass along the details for our upcoming December gathering. On Saturday the 7th, from 2 to 6 PM, I’m hosting our 8th Annual Epic Holiday Musical Shindig at my home. We’ll fire up the PA system, break out more instruments than you can count, and create lots of bodacious grooves and tasty jams. No discussion topics. Just music. And door prizes. And plenty of food, because it wouldn’t be a proper holiday shindig without food. My family will provide an assortment of snacks and finger foods as well as coffee and tea. Please bring a treat to share if you’re able.

As the format for this meeting will be largely an open mic setup, please bring some instruments and have something in mind that you’d like to play. There are plenty of us who play percussion, strings, or other instruments, so if you’d like some accompaniment, just let me know.

If you’d like to contribute something for the door prizes, that would be awesome. In the past, we’ve had enough items that everyone got to take something home, but my own stash of giveaways has dwindled significantly over the last couple years. Old CDs you don’t listen to any more, flute bags, instructional materials, etc. would be great contributions.

We’re located at 112 Oakbeech Ct. in Holly Springs, just south of the Raleigh/Cary area. You should be able to find us on Google Maps or your trusty GPS, but if not, please let me know and I’ll be happy to provide you with directions. We’re on a cul-de-sac so parking is at a premium, but we’ll manage. We do have a large dog, just in case that’s an issue for anyone. I look forward to seeing you there.

November 2019 Meeting

October 29, 2019

Flute Friends,

Our November meeting will be this Saturday the 2nd at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at the home of Melissa and Tony Griffin, 7001 Orchard Knoll Dr in Apex. They lead the Raleigh Drum Circle, so I’m sure we’ll be doing something involving percussion.

This month, we’ll be featuring the music of Tim Gomez, and we’ll look at some flutes that use an older extended range tuning that Tim prefers. Then we’ll do some facilitated playing activities. As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.
In order to make life a little easier for all of us, I went ahead and scheduled out all meetings for 2019. Here’s the schedule for the rest of the year:
