January 2014 Meeting

I hope you survived the holidays unscathed and have had a great start to the new year. To kick things off, our January meeting will be Saturday the 18th at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at the home of Dawn Leith and Ed Dougherty, 359 Green Meadow Lane in Roxboro. It’s a mile or two off 15-501, way north of Durham. They have two big dogs that are in and out of the house, so if you have allergies or other issues, please be aware.

This month, we’ll be talking about playing transverse flutes, and I’m sure we’ll have a few for people to try out. We will also be featuring both the flutes and music of George Tortorelli. As always, we’ll also make lots of music. If you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

Potomac Flute Festival — http://www.potomacflutefestival.org/ — is coming up on March 14-16 in Rockville, MD. It’s a great indoor event packed with classes and workshops. Cornell Kinderknecht, Mark Holland, Suzanne Teng, Scott August, and Arvel Bird will be performing this year. I’ve seen them all over the years and they’re all amazing musicians. Registration info is on the website. The event costs $130 for the full weekend if you register before March 1, or $155 after. Single day tickets are less. If you’re interested in going and would like to share a ride, please let me know. I know of at least one person who is interested in carpooling, and I’d love to help connect people so that more of our friends from the Raleigh/Durham area can attend this festival.

As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 18th at Dawn and Ed’s house.
