August 2018 Meeting

Join us at Tony and Melissa Griffin’s home on Saturday, August 11 at 2pm for the monthly flute circle. We will focus on playing flute with a variety of percussion instruments, from hand drums to gongoma and more!

Mara Cohen will guide us in a layering of sounds and we’ll take turns adding flute song to the rhythm of the circle. Bring your favorite percussion, or select from a vast assortment that will be available for sharing. We’ll have a couple of small amps for those who wish to mic their flutes. The second portion of our time will be playing and chatting about performing with flutes and percussion. Poetry can also be incorporated with the music, so bring a poem if you like.

Snacks provided; feel free to bring a dish to share. Chairs provided. We’ll be outside, weather permitting.

Address:
7001 Orchard Knoll Dr
Apex NC 27539
919-387-3650

Note: we are closer to Cary and Holly Springs than we are to Apex, near the intersection of Holly Springs Road and Ten Ten Road. From Cary’s Crossroads Shopping Center, travel south on Holly Springs Rd for about 5 miles. Turn left onto Ten Ten Rd, then right on Orchard Knoll Dr. We are about .6 mile on the left. White House, yellow door. Feel free to come around to the back deck.

This month, we will also feature the music of Mark Holland (specifically his Wind & Fire album with percussionist N Scott Robinson as it relates to our program) and the flutes of Greg Jones

As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too.

The following is our 2018 schedule. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to host this year. We do still need facilitators some months, as noted below, so please let me know if you’d like to help with leading our playing activities. Here’s the schedule:

September 8: Dave / Facilitator needed
October 20: Barbara
November 3: Jeff & Kim Martin / Facilitator needed
December 8: Annual holiday shindig at Jon’s house

Feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 11th.
