June 2013 Meeting

Flute Friends,

This month, instead of our normal meeting, we’re doing something a bit different. Please join us to welcome the uber-talented multi-instrumentalist and award-winning musician, Randy Granger! Randy will be in North Carolina on Saturday, June 22nd, to grace us with a workshop, potluck meet & greet, and house concert in the pastoral beauty of northern Durham. Please join us at Black Horse Run, 11402 S. Lowell Rd. in Bahama, NC.

If you have not been to one of Randy’s informative and compelling workshops, and desire to hone your skills and become a better player, you simply MUST be there. Players of ALL levels from beginner to advanced will learn something new and are welcome! The workshop curriculum will start at 3:00 and run for two 45-minute blocks with a break in-between, as follows:

THE ABC’S OF PLAYING THE NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE

This workshop explores techniques, concepts, ideas and playing skills for the modern Native American flute. The goal is to bring more expressiveness and enjoyment to your playing experience. Techniques such as tonguing, articulations, yelps, trills, tone and phrasing will be explored and demonstrated in a fun, non-threatening, easily understood manner. Many of the techniques are the same used by professional recording artists including Granger, a professional, full-time musician.

The second half of the workshop will be in what is called a Master Class format. Master classes are well known in classical music education as a way for students to receive feedback on their playing from a professional. Granger will listen, offer positive feedback as well as areas of improvement. You will be able to witness how subtle changes in your playing, posture or breathing can improve your stamina and communication as a musician whether you play for your own enjoyment or aspire to become a professional. This workshop is a MUST for any player of any level and you will take home new skills and techniques from this master musician. Randy makes his workshops FUN! Bring a flute of any key and a list of some areas you might like to improve your own playing.

Randy Granger is an award-winning recording artist, composer, flute instructor and performing artist. He is classically trained in percussion, voice and performance. A former instructor with the Yamaha School of Music as well as private students, he now conducts workshops around the country on flute and Hang playing. The majority of Granger’s private students are now taught via Skype with students all around the world. He has performed and shared the stage with R. Carlos Nakai, Michael Graham Allen, Peter Phippen, Skip Healy, Scott August among many other top recording artists. His workshops are extremely popular and he has facilitated flute playing workshops at INAFA, Zion Canyon, Native Rhythms, Oklahoma Flute fest, Handpangea to name a few.

After the workshop, we will have a potluck supper starting at 5:00 and meet and greet before the concert, which starts at 7:00. Please bring a dish to share, as Black Horse Run is in the country, with no food options nearby.

HOUSE CONCERT WITH RANDY

Please share the concert info with friends and family, as this show will be one you DO NOT want to miss. Everyone in our flute family needs to hear the incredible talent that is Randy Granger, live in an intimate house-concert setting. Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Randy Granger blends elements of southwest music like Native American flutes with world percussion, distinctive vocals and other worldly Pan instruments like the Halo, the Hang and Moyo. The unique sound and energy of Granger’s live performances has earned him headline status at many Native American and World Music festivals around the U.S. His YouTube channel has 1.5 million views. He’s been nominated for and won many awards including the Indian Summer Music Awards, Native American Music Awards (NAMMY’S), New Mexico Music Industry Awards, US Songwriting Competition and many others.
