June 2018 Meeting

Flute Friends,

Our June meeting will be this Saturday the 2nd at 2PM. This time, we’ll be at my home, 112 Oakbeech Ct in Holly Springs. We’re on a cul de sac and parking is at a premium, so find spots where you’re able.

Instead of our typical program featuring a flutemaker and recording artist, I’ll be doing a seminar on the history and evolution of flutes in North America. The modern flute that we all know and love is a fairly new creation. In this workshop, we will explore the origins of wind instruments in North America, starting with primitive bone instruments and the rim-blown flutes of Ancestral Puebloan cultures. Then, using replicas of several historical instruments as well as some more recent flutes, we’ll take a look at how the Native American Flute has evolved over the last 200 years to become the instrument we play today.

For our playing time this month, Rick is going to do a quick review of Number TAB as taught by Scott August, and then we’ll play some rounds.

As always, if you have a song to share, whether it’s a traditional tune, an improv piece, or a jam with you and a few friends, we look forward to hearing it. If you just want to hang out and listen, that’s cool too. If you’d like to bring a snack to share, feel free to do so.

The following is our 2018 schedule. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to host this year. We do still need facilitators some months, as noted below, so please let me know if you’d like to help with leading our playing activities. Here’s the schedule:

July 7: Dawn & Ed
August 11: Melissa & Tony / Mara
September 8: Dave / Facilitator needed
October 6: Barbara
November 3: Jeff & Kim Martin / Facilitator needed
December 8: Annual holiday shindig at Jon’s house

Feel free to get in touch if you have any feedback regarding the flute circle. I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd.
